Theory of operations
Flexible definition of traffic probes
- Physical : traffic analysis per router interface (default probe)
- Logical : a set of routers' interfaces (ex : global analysis of a Data Center with multiple routers)
- Custom : traffic filter to spilt a physical probe into logical probes (per BU, trafic type, etc.)
These probe definitions allow to adapt traffic analysis to many situations.
The portal
Raw Data are recorded in the SQL DataBase. The raw data retention period can be determined by probe. It may be set at 3 days for a Data Center and one day for a remote site. These data are generallly handled by network experts through the "Flow Search" tool.

Historical reports are produced by aggregating data every 5 minutes with trafic filters. We distinguish :
-
standard analysis filters based on Netflow key fields adress or port. They are used to produce the TOP reports.
-
customized analysis filters, more complex (based on several Netflow fields), which track critical traffics for the user (ERP, Data Base replication stream, ToIP, etc.). These analysis filters are used to produce CUSTOM reports.
(Historical) Reports
Available by tabs, the portal provides standard reports and customized reports .
Standard TOP Reports
They allow, as the name suggest, the following of the main traffics consuming the bandwidth.
Custom reports
-
Follow-up of critical applications (after definition)
-
Follow-up of relevant flows for the user (priority traffics, BU, etc.)
These reports require additional setup to define, in relation with the user, which flows are relevant to follow.
The "Investigate" feature
It monitors the evolution of a service or an application during a period. One can have flow details for a traffic peak or the TOP Pairs at the origin of this peak.

"Flow Search" tool
It's a kind of "tool box" very useful for Traffic engineering and Troubleshooting with the following capabilities :
-
Flow search using multi-criteria filtes ;
-
Named filters to make search easier ;
-
Sorted flow tables ;
-
Flow export in several formats (CSV, XLS, XML & PDF)
-
Detailed graph for selected flow.
